As one of London Ontario’s most experienced criminal lawyers, James Zegers has represented thousands of clients charged with criminal offences - from shoplifting to murder - and has successfully defended hundreds of wrongfully accused at trial.
With twenty years of experience in criminal law, James understands the devastation that criminal charges can bring to a person’s life. Every client’s case is approached with expertise and compassion. James fights to ensure his clients obtain the best possible outcome. Most often charges can be resolved without going to trial.
James attended Western University where he earned degrees in both English Literature and Education. A graduate of the Western University Faculty of Law, he possesses an in-depth knowledge of criminal law and procedure, including the Criminal Code, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, and the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Born and raised in rural Oxford County, James understands real people and the problems they face. He is a dual citizen of Canada and the Netherlands and has studied International Law at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. His wide-ranging interests give him a unique perspective and a wide breadth of knowledge, both of law and life, which he applies in his practice.
The law is constantly changing and evolving, and James is committed to on-going professional development and education. In addition to teaching as an adjunct professor of Business Law at Brescia, he is also a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada and is active as a trustee of the Middlesex Law Association.
James is also active as a volunteer in his community. He is a member of the organizing committee for Court House Rocks, an annual fundraising event that has raised over $250,000 for London Lawyers Feed the Hungry. In the past he served as the chairperson on the board of directors for the Home County Folk Festival. Currently he is a trustee on the board of the Middlesex Law Association.
In his spare time, James likes to spend time with his figure skating granddaughter and his computer game obsessed grandson.
